Preserving the environment
The Association has set a goal of preserving environmental quality and quality of life in Haifa and its surrounding areas.
Municipal wastewater contains sanitary and industrial wastewater discharged into municipal sewage systems. Municipal wastewater contains biohazardous substances (parasites, microbes and viruses) that endanger public health that include organic substances, suspended solids, nitrogen compounds, phosphorus compounds and heavy metals. Their untreated discharge into the environment causes serious contamination of surface water and groundwater resources, odor nuisances and aesthetic impacts and may cause sanitary hazards.
If wastewater is discharged onto shorelines or into streams, extensive damage may be caused to the ecological system, to flora and fauna, with impacts on marine activity (such as fishing) and may even endanger human health. The Ministry of Health therefore forbids bathing on beaches where wastewater is discharged.
Thanks to wastewater treatment at the plant, impacts on public health, streams, beaches and the ecological system are avoided.
